dg agric 2World Food Day celebration that is marked annually on the 16th October with aims of tackling global hunger and achieving food security was yesterday commemorated in Siaya County, Sidindi Ward.

The event which was graced by the County Deputy Governor Dr. James Okumbe witnessed a huge turn out as partners, farmers and locals showcased various areas of specialisation in the Agricultural sector.

Dr. Okumbe while addressing the participants explained that since the inception of devolution, the County Government has supported farmers in various areas with good intentions of improving food security, identifying access to farm input and subsidised tractor hire services as some of the support the government has accorded farmers.

Whilst assuring farmers of the government’s continued support in creating a conducive environment for agricultural development and investments in the sector, he pointed that the most certain way of ensuring food security is by scaling up Agriculture which continues to play a vital role in sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Agriculture CECM Dr. Elizabeth Odhiambo in her speech encouraged farmers to go for certified seeds and promised that the department will ensure that enough subsidised fertilizers are provided to small scale farmers. She further encouraged the farmers to embrace the use of organic fertilizer as well as diversification into other types of crops other than maize.

Siaya County Assembly Agriculture Committee Chairperson Honorable Willis urged farmers to form saccos since it would create an avenue that will make it easy for them to get support from the government. This he proposed even as he asked area residents to ensure that each household has a kitchen garden to help curb hunger issues and the practice among youths constantly asking for handouts.

This year’s theme Our actions are our future, Healthy Diets for a zero Hunger World was dimmed appropriate considering the ever growing population of over a million people thus encouraging the push for sustainable improvement in our agricultural productivity while building resilience and adaptability of farmers.

Also in attendance were the area MCA Hon. Wandera, Chief Officer Agriculture Mr. Charles Siso, Chief Officer Governance Mr. Joseph Omondi, the Ward Administrator,area Chief among other guests.
