The partnership between County Government of Siaya and other development partners has ensured that in the last four months small scale farmers have been equipped with the fundamental knowledge regarding the growth of finger millet and its production.
In the next four years over 30,000 farmers are targeted to exercise the farming at the standards required and there is a guarantee that market for the crop will not be a problem. This is made possible through the collaborative agric- tech project led by technocrats at UK agri-epi, and other vital partners.
The project which was scheduled to run for 18 months is to end in February 2021. The victory of the crop will only be achieved when all farmers and the stakeholders involved have a positive attitude towards the production of the crop according to Dr. Elizabeth Odhiambo, the Executive for Agriculture in the County Government of Siaya. The farmers should make an effort to produce adequate produce of the finger millet which will ensure that they have for consumption and sale.
The County Government of Siaya has made sure that the finger millet ceases to be orphan crop. The reason in embracing the crop in the county, is it’s very nutritious value for both the old and the young people. The crop is also recommended for breastfeeding mothers. The production of finger millet will immensely benefit the residence of Siaya County in terms of health and finance.
