As part of the County Government of Siaya’s efforts to enhance fish production in the County, Dr. Elizabeth Odhiambo, the County Executive Committee Member of Agriculture, Food, Irrigation, Livestock and Fisheries has this week flagged off 15.5 tones of fish feeds to fish cage farmers along the Lake Victoria.
Speaking at the County Head quarters during the flagging off attended by Luanda Kotieno Fish cage farmers association, Dr. Odhiambo asserted that such farmers will receive 7.5 tones more of starter mash and grower pellets to boost the shrinking number of fish distribution in the region. She also said that overtime, the Government will increase the number of fish cages as part of an economic stimulation process.
The Agriculture Chief Officer Mr. Charles Siso , also present during the occasion, said that the County will continue to support smallholder farmers with relevant inputs through groups to ensure that Siaya County does not experience food shortages even as the COVID-19 pandemic continue to strike.
The County Director of Fisheries, Mr. Japheth Bolo also urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the feeds to produce more fish for the County and beyond. Mr. Bolo called upon stakeholders to provide similar support to farmers so that “together we can defeat hunger.”
The farmers were indeed grateful for the support especially at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a negative toll on “our food production.”
They promised that with the availability of such quality feeds, farmers will continue with their activities without disruption so as to guarantee food security.
