H.E Cornel Rasanga Amoth, the Governor, County Government of Siaya has today encouraged the Department of Agriculture staff to escalate service delivery around the World Bank rehabilitated water pans in view of realizing their full potentials.
The Governor who was speaking in Segere, Central Alego Ward during a review meeting with the department’s management and Governor’s service delivery unit led by Director Pauline Onguko. The Governor emphasized the need for mindset change among the pan management committee members to embrace the pans as their own. He equally assured the team of his support especially with challenges that may seem above them.
Dr. Elizabeth Odhiambo, the County Executive for Agriculture, Irrigation, Food Security, Livestock and Fisheries who was present mentioned the milestones that have been realized on the five water pans (Koga, Nyalnawe, Sandhof, Uranga and Futro) that include capacity building on selected value chains, setting up of pan management structures, distribution of various input supplies and provision of relevant linkages.
There has been notable breakthroughs where in the first harvest, close to Kshs.200,000 was made from surplus fish produced in these water pans while Futro alone made KShs.29,000 from the sale of Sukuma Wiki. As a sustainability measure, the County Government has also mobilized the community to participate in stocking the pans.
