At the heart of the HIV prevention efforts is Madam Zilper Imbuye, the Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) Coordinator. Supported by a dedicated team of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), Zilper leads targeted outreach programs and health talks to educate expectant mothers and communities about HIV prevention. These initiatives emphasize regular clinic visits, proper nutrition, and adherence to prescribed medication, empowering families with knowledge and support.<\/p>\n

\"\"During a field visit to Pandi village, we met Rachel Anyango and her husband Shaban Odhiambo, a young couple who shared their transformative experience under the care of Community Health Promoter Lydia Adhiambo. As first-time parents, they faced uncertainty and anxiety. \u201cWe were young and unsure about pregnancy and health,\u201d Rachel recalled. However, Lydia\u2019s regular visits, facilitated through Siaya\u2019s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program, provided consistent support, including routine check-ups, home visits, and guidance on nutrition, hygiene, and clinic appointments. \u201cLydia became like a sister, always checking in and ensuring we understood every step,\u201d Shaban said. The couple credits Siaya County\u2019s robust community health system for making such personalized care possible. \u201cWe feel seen, cared for, and never alone,\u201d Rachel added, smiling. Their story underscores the impact of CHPs, who work tirelessly to improve maternal and child health outcomes across rural communities like Pandi. \u201cWe\u2019re proof this program works\u2014it\u2019s about people who care,\u201d Shaban emphasized.<\/p>\n

\"\"We also met Lilian Anyango Oketch, another Pandi resident, who expressed gratitude for the comprehensive care at her local clinic. Educated about her blood group and provided with malaria prevention drugs and tetanus injections, Lilian\u2019s experience highlights Siaya\u2019s commitment to maternal health through grassroots interventions.<\/p>\n

Complementing these efforts, Siaya County has revolutionized emergency medical services for pregnant mothers through a partnership with Rescue Connect Limited. Launched by the Governor in July 2024, the MamaLink program, managed by Mr. Odhiambo Otieno, the County Chief Nursing Officer and Emergency Medical Services Unit manager, has served 2,700 mothers in its first year. The initiative ensures rapid transfers even from dispensaries or health centers to hospitals for critical care.The County Government of Siaya has supported this initiative by providing 6 new advanced life support ambulances which were allocated to major referral hospitals. The program has reduced average response times from 45 minutes to 27 minutes, significantly lowering risks for mothers and newborns.
\n\"\"Further enhancing this system, Siaya County through the department of health has operationalized a technology-driven Call Center at Siaya County Referral Hospital. Staffed by trained medical dispatchers, primarily nurses, the Call Center streamlines ambulance mobilization and dispatch, ensuring efficiency and sustainability. Mr. Otieno praised the county\u2019s efforts to improve referral services and applauded the Governor\u2019s pledge to add two more ambulances to bolster the existing fleet.<\/p>\n
