\"\"In the rolling hills of East Gem Ward, Gem Sub County , a new chapter in water access is being written. The Ahono-Sinaga Water Project, affectionately renamed \u201cRiver Jordan\u201d by residents, now stands as a symbol of innovation, resilience, and renewal.<\/p>\n

\"\"Originally initiated by the local community in 1990, the project had long struggled with erratic electricity and limited coverage. But everything changed when Governor James Orengo\u2019s administration stepped in. In February 2023, the Governor launched an ambitious rehabilitation effort that has transformed the once-faltering system into a modern-day lifeline serving more than 15,000 residents across villages like Kobor, Kanyasembe, Sagam, and Rabuor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were once at the mercy of rain and riverbeds,\u201d recalls Mama Josephine Auma, a resident of Rabuor. \u201cToday, clean water flows right to our homes \u2014 it\u2019s like a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Central to the transformation was the installation of a hybrid power system integrating 72 solar panels. \u201cThis change has been revolutionary,\u201d explained Sub County Water Engineer Austin Ochieng. \u201cSolar energy has cut down operational costs and improved reliability, especially during dry spells.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s revival, costing Ksh 9.9 million, included new rising mains, three water kiosks, and expanded reach to 19 villages. Beyond infrastructure, Nyalore\u2019s administration focused on sustainability \u2014 training community members to operate and maintain the solar-powered system.<\/p>\n

Mr. Elijah Obor, chairperson of the Ahono-Sinaga Water Project, emphasized the value of community ownership. \u201cWe are no longer passive beneficiaries. We are custodians of our own water system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The initiative was showcased during the 2025 Siaya County Exhibition, themed \u201cGlacier Preservation.\u201d Participants were drawn to the project, where the solar-powered system was lauded for its efficiency and environmental impact \u2014 a reflection of glaciers\u2019 resilience as natural water towers.<\/p>\n

\"\"Access to clean water is a key agenda in Gov. Orengo\u2019s 9-Point Agenda. Complementary projects like the Olago Water Project in South Sakwa Ward and Abura Dam in South Uyoma Ward are steadily addressing water insecurity across Siaya, where nearly 40% of residents still lack access to potable water despite proximity to Lake Victoria.
