\"\"The County Government of Siaya, through the Department of Health, held a sensitization meeting bringing together county health officials and representatives from the national government to strengthen efforts in the fight against tuberculosis (TB) and broaden the focus to overall lung health.<\/p>\n

The meeting was facilited by Florence Wakesho, her team from Clinton Health Access (CHAI) who engaged the Siaya health team on emerging strategies aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB while integrating broader lung health services.<\/p>\n

During the session, participants were taken through the National and global targets aimed at ending TB, leprosy and lung diseases by 2030. Key goals include reducing TB deaths by 90%, lowering TB incidence by 80% compared to the 2015 baseline, and reducing the burden of chronic lung diseases by 20 percent. The strategy also aims to reduce the proportion of people diagnosed with leprosy disability grade 2 to below 5% and ensure that no families face catastrophic costs related to the management of TB, leprosy or lung disease.<\/p>\n

Florence Wakesho from ( CHAI) also highlighted the current TB burden in Kenya based on the World Health Organization Global Report 2025. According to the report, Kenya records an estimated 117,000 TB cases annually, with 94,833 people notified and enrolled in treatment, leaving approximately 21,167 people either undiagnosed or not reported. TB-related deaths stand at about 24,000 annually, including 8,000 deaths among people living with HIV.
\nEncouraging progress has however been made over the years. Data presented during the meeting shows that TB incidence in Kenya has declined by about 45% since 2015, while TB mortality has reduced by 54% over the same period.<\/p>\n

The sensitization emphasized that the national program is now shifting from a narrow TB-focused approach to a more comprehensive lung health strategy, addressing conditions such as chronic respiratory diseases alongside TB. This integrated approach is expected to strengthen prevention, early detection and management of respiratory illnesses across counties.
\nHealth officials from Siaya County welcomed the engagement, noting that strengthening collaboration between the national and county governments is key to achieving the 2030 targets and improving the health outcomes of residents.<\/p>\n

The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to equip county health teams with updated knowledge and strategies necessary to combat TB, reduce lung disease burden and enhance access to quality healthcare services across Siaya County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
