The ongoing fire safety and disaster management training in Siaya entered its second phase with participants undertaking practical demonstrations on (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)LPG handling, fire prevention, and emergency response aimed at strengthening public safety and disaster preparedness. The training session focused on equipping officers and stakeholders with essential knowledge on the safe handling of gas cylinders, identification of gas leakages, and appropriate methods of containing different types of fires.<\/p>\n

Facilitator Errol explained that LPG cylinders are manufactured using reinforced steel due to the high pressure under which the gas is stored. He cautioned against storing cylinders in corrosive environments, warning that corrosion can weaken the metal surface and lead to dangerous leakages.
\nParticipants were also sensitized on the dangers associated with exposing gas cylinders to excessive heat.<\/p>\n

Trainers noted that when liquid gas inside the cylinder is subjected to high temperatures, it boils and expands, increasing internal pressure and potentially resulting in a vapour explosion.<\/p>\n

As part of the practical lessons, participants were taught how to determine the amount of gas remaining in a cylinder using a wet towel technique. According to the trainers, the section containing liquid gas remains cold because of the pressure inside the cylinder, causing water to remain on that part while the empty section dries quickly.<\/p>\n

The practical demonstrations further covered methods of detecting gas leakages. Participants learned that leakage can be identified by removing the burner and applying water around the nozzle, where the formation of bubbles or the presence of a pungent smell indicates escaping gas.<\/p>\n

During firefighting demonstrations, trainers emphasized that water should never be used on cooking oil fires because it intensifies the flames and spreads the fire further. Instead, participants were advised to use wet blankets, wet cloths, soil, or powder to suppress such fires in situations where extinguishers are unavailable.<\/p>\n

The session also demonstrated techniques for controlling gas fires by covering the source with a wet blanket or bucket to block oxygen that supports combustion. Participants additionally received guidance on the correct use of fire extinguishers, including removing the safety pin, aiming at the base of the fire, and applying the extinguishing agent effectively to contain flames.<\/p>\n

During the closing discussions, participants called for increased budgetary allocation to the disaster management unit, enhanced interdepartmental coordination, and the acquisition of additional firefighting and emergency response equipment to improve preparedness across the county. There were also recommendations to transfer the disaster management unit from the public works sector to disaster management sector and expand similar fire safety programmes to villages, schools, and hospitals to strengthen community awareness and preparedness.<\/p>\n

Chief Fire Officer Samuel from Kisumu appealed for increased investment in public training and preventive measures, noting that empowering communities with fire prevention knowledge remains the most effective strategy for protecting lives and property.<\/p>\n

Participants were further introduced to educational resources and certification opportunities offered by Africa Fire Mission, including weekly online classes and specialized one-week training programmes in fire and disaster management.<\/p>\n
