\"\"The Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) has challenged young creatives in Siaya County to take control of their intellectual property before someone else does.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a vibrant #OwnYourWork sensitization drive that drew over 200 young artists, KECOBO\u2019s Deputy Director of Training and Research, Ms. Sharon Chahale Wata, dropped some major news: copyright registration is currently 100% free. She urged artists to move quickly, noting that a registration fee will soon be introduced.<\/p>\n

\"Copyright gives artists the economic and moral muscle to control their work and maximize their earnings,\" Ms. Wata emphasized.<\/p>\n

The forum broke down essential ways creatives can safeguard their work online, including watermarking, tagging, disabling right-click functions, and aggressively reporting violations.<\/p>\n

The youth also learned exactly what can be copyrighted reminding them that legal protection applies specifically to original creative expressions like music, movies, poetry, novels, software, and architectural designs.<\/p>\n

Echoing her sentiments, Siaya County\u2019s Director of Tourism and Culture, Dr. Kennedy Oreyo, lamented how often young talents are exploited. He noted that many artists watch their stolen creations broadcast in the media with zero legal recourse because they failed to secure protection.<\/p>\n

Highlighting how effortless true talent can be, Dr. Oreyo shared the story of the Maranda High School badge\u2014a masterpiece created in under 30 minutes after multiple artists had struggled for days.<\/p>\n

Dr. Oreyo pledged that the county government will continue partnering with KECOBO to uplift and protect local talent.<\/p>\n
