Governor James Orengo today hosted a delegation from National Government to inspect the ongoing Phase II upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.<\/p>\n

\"\"The delegation was led by the Principal Secretary Department of Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru, Ph.D., CBS and his counterpart from the State Department of Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s site inspection visit aimed to assess the progress of development works at the site, review implementation milestones, engage stakeholders, and reaffirm the commitment of the National Government, the County Government of Siaya, and the Ministry of Defence towards the delivery of a world-class facility that will promote talent development, sports excellence, youth empowerment, and regional socio-economic growth.<\/p>\n

During the inspection, Sports Director Dr. Sanmac reported that the Department of Defence and Governor James Orengo remained committed to completing the sports pitch to the required standards by September 2026. He noted that the works will include the installation of an efficient irrigation system and seating on the newly constructed terraces.<\/p>\n

The project officially commenced in September 2025 following a groundbreaking ceremony led by the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya and is being implemented through a collaborative partnership involving the National Government, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), and the County Government of Siaya.<\/p>\n

The project is approximately 70% complete, with all builder\u2019s works on the perimeter wall finished. The installation of grills and coping is pending, while the extension of the terraces is currently ongoing and stands at 80% completion.<\/p>\n

Key features of Phase II include<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Expansion of seating capacity from approximately 5,500 to 20,000 spectators.<\/li>\n
  2. Construction of additional terraces.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    iii. Installation of a roof canopy.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Tarmacking internal ringroad.<\/li>\n
    2. Increasing the height of the perimeter wall.<\/li>\n
    3. Upgrading of supporting infrastructure to meet higher national and international sporting standards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \"\"Purpose of the upgrade<\/strong><\/p>\n

      The expansion is intended to:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Position Siaya as a major regional sports hub.<\/li>\n
      2. Support talent development and youth empowerment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        iii. Enable the stadium to host larger sporting and entertainment events.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Stimulate local economic activity through sports tourism and related businesses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          This landmark project underscores the critical importance of synergy between the County and National Governments in transforming sports infrastructure and unlocking the potential of young people in Siaya. By working together, the two levels of government are not only delivering modern world-class facilities but also creating sustainable platforms for nurturing sporting talent, empowering the youth, and driving inclusive socio-economic development across the county.<\/p>\n
