The Acting County Secretary Ms. Elizabeth Adongo today joined South East Alego Member of County Assembly (MCA ) Hon. Scholastica Madowo and hundreds of widows at Karemo Chief\u2019s Camp, in commemorating International Widows\u2019 Day, observed annually on 23rd June.<\/p>\n

\"\"The day serves as an important platform for widows to share their experiences, support one another, and explore opportunities for economic empowerment and self-reliance. Globally, there are an estimated 258 million widows, with nearly one in every ten living in extreme poverty. Many continue to face discrimination, social exclusion, limited access to credit, and challenges in securing inheritance and property rights.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Adongo reaffirmed the commitment of the County Government of Siaya, under the leadership of Governor James Orengo, to advancing the rights and welfare of widows. She noted that the Governor strongly supported the proposed Widowed Persons Protection Bill that was already operationalized into law.<\/p>\n

Ms. Adongo who also acts as the Head of the County Public Service emphasized that economic empowerment will be a key pillar of the County's support for widows. She encouraged widows to organize themselves into SACCOS and cooperatives to enhance access to government funds, development opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods.<\/p>\n

She further called upon government agencies and stakeholders to work together in safeguarding widows' rights, ensuring that issues of inheritance, land ownership, and social protection are adequately addressed. She noted that protecting and empowering widows directly translates into improved livelihoods for their children, families, and entire communities.<\/p>\n

Ms. Adongo commended organizations, community leaders, and development partners championing the welfare of widows, noting that empowering widows strengthens families, uplifts communities, and promotes inclusive development.<\/p>\n
