The same Cabinet directive also tasked the department with developing comprehensive guidelines for managing the county fleet. This transition marks a significant step towards streamlined management of county vehicles and transport resources.

Led by the Director of Roads and Transport, Eng. Shem Ojwando, the workshop brought together county officials and representatives from various departments to review the current transport system and develop practical solutions to longstanding operational challenges.

In detailed presentations, the Head of the Transport Unit, Mr. George Obare, and Mr. Hesbon Jakoyo highlighted key issues affecting the county fleet. These include vehicle acquisition and disposal, maintenance, insurance, fuel management, compliance with transport regulations, work ticket management, and coordination between the National and County governments.

Mr. Philip Abiero emphasized the need for a clear operational framework to strengthen the management of the county garage. Participants also explored strategies to improve driver training, streamline insurance claim procedures, seal fuel leakages, and adopt modern technology for better fleet oversight.

Madam Josephine from the Department of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture proposed the introduction of a digital fleet tracking system. Other key recommendations included the establishment of designated parking areas for county vehicles, timely payment of maintenance bills, department-specific vehicle allocation and branding, as well as the acquisition of a staff van and bus to improve official transport services.

The workshop, which continues over the next two days, will focus on deliberating the best approaches for implementing these reforms. Participants are expected to develop actionable strategies aimed at building a more efficient, accountable, and sustainable transport system for Siaya County.

This initiative underscores the County Government of Siaya’s commitment to prudent resource management, improved service delivery, and operational excellence in the transport sector.

By Bephrey Oduor The Department of Public Works, Roads, Energy and Transport has convened a three-day Fuel and Fleet Management Workshop at Marais Hotel in North Alego Ward to enhance the efficiency and accountability of the county’s transport system.
