Siaya County Empowers Farmers with Free Chicks Distribution and Training in East Ugenya

The County Government of Siaya, through its Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock, and Blue Economy, conducted a two-day training on best poultry management practices, disease control, and sustainable farming techniques, which culminated in chicks distribution in East Ugenya Ward, Ugenya Sub-County.

Aimed at empowering local farmers, the exercise involved distributing 10,000 vaccinated one-month-old chicks, valued at Ksh 4 million, to over 400 farmer groups free of charge. The initiative, part of the county’s strategy to enhance poultry farming, boost food security, and increase household income, provided farmers with a vital starting point to establish or expand poultry enterprises.

The County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Mr. Sylvester K’Otieno, emphasized the program’s potential, stating, “These improved kienyeji chickens grow fast, lay more eggs, and are resistant to many common diseases. With good care, they can bring real income to our farmers.”

The initiative is projected to yield significant economic benefits, with farmers potentially earning KSh 8 million from selling 10,000 mature chickens at an average price of KSh 800 each within a year. After accounting for costs such as feed, healthcare, and management, farmers could realize a collective profit of approximately KSh 1 million, highlighting the lucrative potential of well-managed poultry farming.

This program reflects the Nyalore Administration’s commitment to diversifying agricultural activities and fostering rural enterprise development, with the goal of promoting sustainable growth and improving residents’ socio-economic status. The administration plans to monitor and evaluate the intervention’s impact, with intentions to expand similar initiatives to other wards and sub-counties, further strengthening the county’s agricultural sector.

The event was graced by key leaders, including Chief Officer for Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock, and Blue Economy, Mrs. Elizabeth Adongo; Director of Crops, Mr. Vincent Okoth; and the host, Member of County Assembly, Hon. Fredrick Omoro.
