David Onyunde’s Agricultural Triumph in Siaya County

The County Government of Siaya, through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Food Security, and Blue Economy, led by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Sylvester K’Okoth, visited David Onyunde’s farm in West Ugenya Ward as part of the 2025 Long Rains Campaign.

Mr. Onyunde is more than a farmer, he is a role model for many in Siaya County. He cultivates soya beans on over 43 acres, dedicates an additional two acres to sunflowers and maize, and practices horticulture, growing kales and various African leafy vegetables.

Through dedication and innovation, he has transformed small-scale subsistence farming into a profitable enterprise. By treating his farm as a business, he strategically plans production to meet market demands and maximize returns.

His farm also serves as a vital source of employment, providing regular work for local youth and women in tasks such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and sorting produce. This creates income opportunities for numerous families in West Ugenya.

Furthermore, he has revitalized previously idle land, turning it into productive agricultural spaces. With support from the Siaya County Government, he has received free inputs, including sunflower and soya bean seeds, and benefits from ongoing guidance from the local ward agricultural extension officer. These resources have significantly enhanced both the quality and quantity of his harvests.

This season, his 43-acre soya farm is expected to yield 1,200 kilograms per acre, totaling over 51,600 kilograms.

With an estimated income of nearly 3 million Kenyan shillings, his success demonstrates that well-supported and efficiently managed agriculture can be a reliable source of income and a catalyst for community development.

Onyunde’s story exemplifies how Siaya County’s agricultural initiatives are empowering farmers and fostering thriving communities.
