The County Government of Siaya, through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Food Security, and Blue Economy, in partnership with the State Department of Livestock Development, commissioned three key projects today, funded by the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP).
Valued collectively at KSh 46 million, the projects include the Arongo Water Pan in West Uyoma Ward, the Bondo Slaughterhouse and Solar-Powered Borehole in North Sakwa Ward, and the Ng’iya Livestock Market in South East Alego Ward.
In West Uyoma Ward, over 1,500 households will benefit from improved water access following the commissioning of the Arongo Water Pan, an event presided over by the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke.
Constructed at a cost of KSh 15.3 million under KeLCoP, the water pan has a storage capacity of 22,000 cubic meters. It is designed to provide a reliable, affordable water source for domestic use, livestock, and small-scale irrigation, addressing persistent water shortages in the area.
Also commissioned was the rehabilitated Bondo Slaughterhouse in North Sakwa Ward, funded by KeLCoP at a cost of Ksh. 8 million. The upgraded facility now features new slaughtering bays, a perimeter fence, a biogas system, and an improved waste management system. These enhancements improve hygiene standards, operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and public health outcomes in Bondo and surrounding areas. The facility will ensure a consistent supply of safe meat, streamline inspection services, and support emerging micro-businesses.
Additionally, a solar-powered piping system and community watering point are under construction to supply water to the slaughterhouse and neighboring communities at a cost of Ksh 5.4 million. A solar-powered borehole, valued at Ksh 5.5 million, has also been installed to provide a sustainable water source for the facility and surrounding areas.
In South East Alego Ward, a state-of-the-art livestock market at Ng’iya was commissioned, marking a significant step toward enhancing the region’s agricultural economy and livestock trade systems. This KeLCoP-funded project features modern livestock sorting yards, an administration block, and a digital weighing machine, creating a structured environment that empowers farmers and traders to secure better incomes.
KeLCoP has been a vital partner in the Nyalore Administration’s efforts to address climate change and promote sustainability. The County Government plans to further strengthen this value chain through targeted training programs to boost production and ensure long-term sustainability.
Accompanying the Principal Secretary were County Secretary Mr. Joseph Ogutu, Mr Speaker of the County Assembly of Siaya, Rt. Hon. George Okode, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Food Security, and Blue Economy, Mr. Sylvester K’Okoth, Chief Officer Madam Elizabeth Adongo, several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), and representatives from both county and National governments.
