Governor James Orengo has made a significant contribution to the Sega Duke Traders Association by donating funds to support over 150 small-scale traders at Sega Market in North Ugenya Ward.
This initiative targets market vendors, shopkeepers, and hawkers, with the goal of improving their livelihoods and fostering economic growth in the region. The donation reflects Orengo’s commitment to empowering local communities through targeted economic interventions.
The programme aligns closely with two key agendas of the Nyalore Manifesto: Agenda 7, which emphasises resource mobilisation and job creation, and Agenda 9, which prioritises the empowerment of women, youth, and persons living with disabilities (PLWDs). By supporting small-scale traders, the initiative seeks to create sustainable economic opportunities and enhance social inclusion for these groups.
This effort is a key component of Orengo’s broader economic blueprint for Siaya County, which focuses on pooling resources and delivering stimulus packages to promote middle-income earners across the county’s six sub-counties.
To further bolster market infrastructure, the Siaya County government has allocated funds in the 2024/25 budget for the construction of several markets, including Boro, Siaya (developed in partnership with the national government), and Bondo Mitumba markets. The latter was recently commissioned, marking a milestone in improving trading facilities. Additionally, last month, the county disbursed millions of shillings to women traders at Sega Market, enabling them to expand their businesses and increase their incomes. To enhance security and extend trading hours, lighting masts have been installed at various markets, creating safer and more accessible environments for traders.
The donation event at Sega Polytechnic was attended by prominent figures, including Siaya County Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. George Okode, CECM for Health and Sanitation Dr. Martin K’Onyango, Chief Officer for Governance, Administration, and ICT Hon. Walter Okelo, and former nominated MCA Hon. Winnie Mercy, among others. Their presence underscored the importance of this initiative and the county’s commitment to supporting local traders.
Governor Orengo’s efforts demonstrate a strategic approach to economic development, focusing on grassroots empowerment and infrastructure improvement. By investing in small-scale traders and market facilities, the county government aims to create a robust economic ecosystem that benefits a wide range of residents. These initiatives not only provide immediate financial relief but also lay the foundation for long-term prosperity in Siaya County, ensuring that traders, particularly women, youth, and PLWDs, have the resources and opportunities needed to thrive.
