On Thursday 5th June, 2025, the Department of Water, Environment, Irrigation, Climate Change and Natural Resources led the residents of North Ugenya Ward in celebrating World Environment Day with a tree-planting initiative and a large-scale clean-up at Bar Ober Shopping Centre.
The event, held at Ralak Primary School, focused on practical environmental actions. Volunteers planted hundreds of trees to combat deforestation and promote biodiversity while clearing waste from the Bar Ober Shopping Centre and Market to emphasize proper waste management and reduce pollution. The initiative not only beautified public spaces but also highlighted the critical role of local leadership in environmental conservation.
Aligned with this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution”, the event underscored the urgency of collective action against climate change and plastic pollution. Speakers emphasized the need for sustained community engagement to preserve Siaya’s natural resources and encouraged residents to adopt eco-friendly practices year-round, ensuring the event’s impact extends beyond a single day.
The initiative saw enthusiastic participation from diverse groups, including the Chief Officer for Water, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, Mr. Michael Oliech; the Director of Water and Sanitation, Mr. Gabriel Oduong; the Kenya Forest Service; the Red Cross Society; and the County Scout Commissioner. Representatives from KeNHA, AGRISS, NEMA, Steward of Grace Organization, Tembea Youths Team, Dacca Programme, Siaya National Polytechnic, and staff and students from Ralak Girls Secondary School and Ralak Primary School also joined.
