The County Government of Siaya has launched a transformative agribusiness development initiative to enhance the profitability of local farming and engage youth as key drivers of agricultural enterprise.
In a KSh 3 million, six-month partnership agreement, the Nyalore Administration through the Department for Agriculture, Livestock, Food Security, and Blue Economy will collaborate with GIZ Agri Jobs 4 Youth and its implementing partner, BAYE Africa (Business Acceleration for Young Entrepreneurs in Africa) together with the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) to address longstanding challenges in the agricultural sector by strengthening agribusiness advisory services and fostering youth engagement through mentorship and capacity building.
During the signing ceremony, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Food Security, and Blue Economy, Mr. Sylvester K’Okoth, emphasized the importance of nurturing a new generation of skilled agricultural entrepreneurs. “This project is a turning point for our farmers, especially the youth, who have the potential to transform agriculture into a robust economic driver for Siaya,” he stated.
The project aims to:
• Build the institutional capacity of the County Department of Agriculture to deliver agribusiness advisory services while enhancing business advisory skills for 24 ward agricultural officers and six agribusiness officers.
• Empower 120 agricultural entrepreneurs with essential business and financial management skills.
• Promote youth involvement in agribusiness through structured mentorship and hands-on learning models.
The project’s initial phase will involve a comprehensive capacity needs assessment to evaluate the existing skills of agricultural officers and identify gaps in business advisory services.
This initiative, which is part of the 2025 Long Rains Campaign under the Extension in Action Pillar, also aims to reshape extension services by integrating technical expertise with agribusiness skills is expected to significantly enhance the commercialization of agriculture in Siaya, create jobs, and make farming a more attractive and sustainable venture for young people.
The County Government of Siaya continues to position agriculture as a cornerstone of economic growth and development, with this initiative marking a significant step toward achieving that vision.
