Siaya Partners With The Association of Nurses and Global Outreach (TANGO) to Offer Free Surgical Camp

The County Government of Siaya, in collaboration with the Tango Foundation, has organized a free surgical camp, an initiative aimed at providing essential medical services to the people of Siaya. This event, scheduled to begin from the 10th to the 14th of February 2025, is to be held at two key locations: Siaya County Referral Hospital and Bondo Sub-County Hospital.

The remarkable event is being preceded by the pre-surgical camp registration, which began on 14th and ending on 31st of January 2025 in all sub-county hospitals in Siaya. During this period, the residents have been buzzed with anticipation and preparation, with those who have long suffered from conditions requiring surgical interventions, now seeing a glimmer of hope.

The delegation from Tango Foundation will be led by Dr. Ryan Torrie, who has a diverse and accomplished background in the field of family medicine, among other teams of specialists in medicine. Dr. Torrie completed his medical education at the University of Utah School of Medicine and further pursued his residency in Family Medicine at Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital. With his experience and leadership, the camp is set to offer a comprehensive range of services, including all major and minor general surgeries, as well as obstetrics and gynecology operations, in collaboration with medical doctors from the County Government of Siaya.

This partnership will ensure a blend of international expertise with local knowledge, promising high-quality care with the presence of international doctors not only bringing advanced techniques but also showing a sense of global solidarity in humanitarian efforts. In addition to this surgical initiative, the Nyalore Administration has made significant strides in healthcare infrastructure. These achievements include the upgrading of six dispensaries such as Rera (Gem), Ong’ielo (Rarieda), Boro (Alego Usonga), Ting-Wan’gi (Alego Usonga), Urenga (Ugenya), and Usigu (Bondo) to level three facilities, officially recognized in the Kenya Gazette. Originally, Siaya had ten sub-county hospitals, with Siaya County Teaching and Referral Hospital now a level five facility, and the others elevated to level four.

The construction at Yala Sub-County Hospital for new casualty/emergency and maternity complexes is 50% done and is expected to be complete in 3-4 months. Last year in September, the CGS commissioned the Madiany Maternity Complex in an event presided by First Lady Mrs. Betty Murungi Orengo, following the construction and commissioning of Ambira’s Maternity Theatre in 2023.

The administration is also on the cusp of launching an ultramodern Surgical Theatre Complex at Siaya County Referral Hospital, alongside the nearly completed funeral parlour at 98 percent, and another one in Bondo Sub-County Hospital, which is ready for equipping and commissioning.

Complementing these infrastructural advancements, the Nyalore Administration supports Community Health Promoters (CHPs) by providing them with necessary kits and a monthly stipend of Ksh. 3000, in addition to national government support, aiming to bolster community health services and ensure grassroots-level healthcare benefits. This comprehensive approach by Siaya County, blending international collaboration with local development and improving infrastructural development, reflects a holistic commitment to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare as enshrined in the 9-Point Agenda.
