Solar-Powered Water Project In Got Matar Brings Sustainable Access To 3000+ Households.

Initiated in 2020 and fully commissioned by Governor James Orengo in 2022, the Got Matar Primary School Water Project serves approximately 500 pupils, the teaching staff, and the surrounding community.

The project employs a token-based system to promote efficient water use and prevent wastage. In an interview with County Media, senior teacher Madam Dorothy Owiti expressed gratitude to the County Government of Siaya for bringing water closer to the school, significantly benefiting the community. The water supports multiple uses at the school, including drinking, cooking, cleaning utensils, and washing clothes. Additionally, it serves the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Centre, where pupils receive fortified porridge, supported by the Nyalore administration, which also employs one teacher.

Residents of Nyamonye Centre in Yimbo East Ward commended the Orengo-led administration for solarizing the water project, which now benefits over 3,000 households. Water is pumped from an intake at Oele Beach, treated, and distributed from a facility at Got Matar Hills. The project has eliminated the need for women and pupils to travel long distances to fetch water from beaches, improving access to a reliable water source.

The Nyalore administration ensures water quality through proper siltation and treatment, making it safe for drinking and livestock use. The system is powered by both solar energy and electricity, with solar backup proving invaluable during power outages. The solarization project that costed Ksh. 7M is the second largest in the county and serves residents from Got Matar to Nyamonye , Abidha, Buriro, Uhanga, Kuoyo, Chunga, matar village and Ulongi villages.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which focuses on ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all. It also supports Gov. Orengo’s 9-Point Agenda, as outlined in the Nyalore Manifesto, which prioritizes universal access to clean and safe drinking water, enhancing community well-being and sustainable development in Siaya County.
