Groundbreaking of Akala and Ndori Market Link Roads Upgrade to Bitumen Standards

The County Government of Siaya (CGS), led by Governor James Orengo, has launched an ambitious project to upgrade the 1.10 km Akala Market Link Road to bitumen standard, aligning with the county’s Integrated Five-Year Development Plan.
This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to enhancing transportation, improving safety, and fostering trade across Siaya County—delivering tangible benefits to residents and businesses alike.
The Akala Market Link Road upgrade features a single carriageway with a 6.0-meter running lane and a 1.2-meter pavement width, complemented by a 0.5-meter embankment. The road is constructed with a robust foundation, including a 150 mm gravel-filled upper subgrade and a 100 mm asphalt layer. To ensure durability and functionality, the project incorporates comprehensive drainage systems such as culverts, detailed channels, and stone-filled walls. Theodoric Enterprises Ltd. is spearheading this effort, with oversight from the Chief Officer of Public Works and Roads, ensuring high-quality execution under the guidance of the resident engineer and unit manager.
In a parallel effort, the county has also begun upgrading the 1.0 km Ndori Market Link Road, a six-month project designed to enhance access and stimulate economic activity. This road will feature a 6.0-meter single carriageway, a 1.2-meter footpath on one side, and 0.5-meter shoulders. Its construction includes a 150 mm thick mechanically stabilized gravel sub-base, a 150 mm hand-packed stone base, and a 50 mm asphalt concrete layer, ensuring a long-lasting surface. Additional drainage enhancements—such as hill cutting, pipe installation, concrete basin construction, and stonework—along with curbs, ledges, and road signs, will improve safety and usability for all road users. Mijesh Enterprises Limited is tasked with delivering this project, supervised by the Regional Roads Director and the Principal Secretary for Public Works and Roads, with funding provided by the County Government of Siaya.
Once completed, these upgraded roads will transform residential, commercial, and public access in the region. Designed with pedestrian and cyclist safety in mind, the roads will facilitate smoother, more efficient movement, boosting inter-trade at Ndori Market and supporting local commerce at Akala Market. Reduced congestion, enhanced security, and better connectivity will create an environment ripe for business growth and improved quality of life.
These projects are part of a broader wave of infrastructure improvements under Governor Orengo’s Nyalore Administration, which is dedicated to making Siaya a more connected and prosperous county. By prioritizing not just road upgrades but also the well-being of its people, the administration is laying the groundwork for sustainable development. The initiatives reflect a proactive approach to addressing community needs, ensuring that every corner of Siaya benefits from enhanced mobility and economic opportunity.
The launch events were graced by notable figures, including Speaker of the County Assembly of Siaya, Hon. George Okode, alongside CECMs Hon. Prof. Jacqueline Oduol (Water), Mr. Sylvester K’Okoth (Agriculture), Mr. Martin K’Onyango (Health), and Mr. Maurice Mc’Orege (Lands), Chief Officer Roads and Public Works, Kevin Okoth Ajuul, and Director Public Communication, Crispine Omondi A. Local MCAs, including Hon. Brian Anyango (Otuom Polo, South Gem Ward) and Hon. Gordon Onguru (East Asembo Ward), also attended, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving these transformative efforts.
