Siaya Commemorates International Women’s Day with a Call for Empowerment

Siaya County joined the global community in marking International Women’s Day at Nyangera Sports Ground, West Yimbo Ward, Usigu Sub-County. The ceremony, themed 'Accelerate Action,' served as both a celebration of the progress made in advancing women’s rights and a reminder of the ongoing challenges women face worldwide.

The event highlighted the invaluable contributions of women to society, emphasizing the importance of women’s empowerment and the well-being of the girl child. Governor James Orengo, in leading the celebrations, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting women in their endeavors, particularly economic empowerment. He urged women to explore opportunities in business and agriculture to sustain their livelihoods and foster financial independence.

"Women in marginalized areas are more often living in off-farm areas where there is little support," the Governor noted during his address. Orengo further pledged to collaborate with organizations like Siaya Muungano Network to provide resources and opportunities for women in crop farming, offering mapping and agricultural sensitization to ensure food security.

Mr. Hillary Omondi, representing Siaya Muungano Network, shed light on the critical issues affecting women in the region, including gender-based violence (GBV), equality challenges, health disparities, economic inequality, and limited access to education and training.

He emphasized the organization’s proactive measures to address these setbacks, ensuring women have the support they need to thrive.

In partnership with the Stawisha Africa Initiative and various intergovernmental gender psychology groups, Siaya Muungano Network has successfully enrolled over 40 women in tertiary training institutions. These programs focus on active support for young women tackling health challenges, skill acquisition, and providing assistance to widows. Mr. Omondi called for continued support and collaboration to uplift women in society.

During the ceremony, free eye clinic services were offered to attendees, supported by Eye Health Africa. This initiative was part of a broader effort to address health challenges faced by women in the community. Several organizations, including Stawisha Africa Initiative, Smart Start Siaya, Maendeleo ya Wanawake, Siaya Young Women Alliance, YWCA Kenya, Mildmay Kenya, Make Way, Motisha A Dada, KMET, The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), Radio Mikayi, and Power to Youth, came together to support the event. Their collective efforts underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing women’s rights and gender equality.

The Governor was accompanied by Speaker of the County Assembly of Siaya, Rt. Hon. George Okode; CECMs Prof. Hon. Jacqueline Oduol (Environment, Water, Climate Change and Natural Resources), Dr. Edgar Otumba (Education, Youth Affairs, Gender and Social Services), and Madam Angeline Atieno (Tourism, Culture, Sports and Arts); Chief Officer for Gender and Social Services, who is also acting Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Judith Oyugi; Bondo Sub-County Administrator Mr. Vincent Kanyangoda; Director of Gender and Social Services, Maida Nyawade; a host of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs); and other leaders.

The ceremony concluded with a powerful call to action from all leaders present, who pledged to advocate for policies that will help realize the dream of gender equality. Awards were also presented to influential women in the community, recognizing their contributions and marking a fitting end to the event.

International Women’s Day in Siaya County was a testament to the power of collective action in addressing the challenges faced by women.

Through partnerships, policy advocacy, and community engagement, Siaya County is taking significant steps toward a future where women and girls can thrive without barriers.

As Mr. Omondi aptly put it, 'It’s time for all of us to take affirmative action and see the policies implemented to realize women’s rights and the gender equality dream.'
