The dusty courts of Nyanza echoed with cheers, hopes, and fierce competition as schools clashed in the regional volleyball preliminaries held at Mulaha Primary School, Alego Usonga Sub County.
Among the contenders stood Asango Junior School, a day school from in Sigomre Ward, Ugunja subcounty, slowly but surely building a name for itself in the volleyball arena. Their journey, though filled with setbacks, tells a story of growth, passion, and unwavering determination.
Led by Coach Mr. Felix Solo, Asango Junior School made their debut at the regional level, a milestone that reflected weeks of hardwork. Their first game was a challenging one—up against the well-seasoned Kisumu. The match ended in disappointment, with Asango losing. However, the team through their coach immediately lodged an appeal, citing concerns over over-age players from the opposing team. The outcome of the appeal aside, it was evident that Asango had come to fight.
The second match pitted them against Ligisa Junior School from Homa Bay County, a powerhouse with a reputation for tactical dominance. Ligisa’s experience showed as they defeated Asango 2–0 in straight sets. Despite the loss, Asango’s performance hinted at potential—particularly in their sharp attacking plays, a strength that both impressed spectators and gave the team something to build on.
Coach Felix, though facing the sting of two consecutive defeats, chose encouragement over criticism. “We’ve just started this journey at the regional level. It’s tough, but we are tougher. We’ll grow,” he said. He promised to organize more friendly matches within the subcounty, targeting strong opponents such as Ambira High School to sharpen his young squad’s skills.
Supporting Coach Felix is Assistant Coach Joseph Muresha, whose passion for volleyball is infectious. “In Asango, volleyball is not just a sport—it’s a culture. The net is always up. The players come early, they stay late. They’re self-driven, and they love this game,” he proudly said.
But the path hasn't been easy. Challenges abound—a torn volleyball net, inadequate balls, and a lack of basic playing kits have made training a daily test of resolve. Yet, in the face of these obstacles, Asango’s spirit shines.
Trainer Wycliff Omondi shared insight into their rigorous training schedule: “We train consistently from 3 pm to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. No shortcuts. We build from within.” That dedication paid off when Asango defeated the talented Oyamo Junior School from Bondo subcounty at the county level, earning their spot at the regionals—a huge accomplishment that filled the school and its community with pride.Their progress hasn’t gone unnoticed. The school extended heartfelt appreciation to the County Government of Siaya for facilitating the hosting of the games. Such platforms are more than just competitions—they’re opportunities for young players to showcase their talents, gain exposure, and build confidence in both their sporting and academic journeys. The County Government of Siaya under leadership of Gov. James Orengo has shown that with continued strategic investment in the sporting facilities, the county could very well host national championships in the near future.
Meanwhile, Ligisa Junior School, the champions of the day, continue their march forward, securing a spot in the final rounds of the regional preliminaries. Their polished teamwork and calm execution under pressure gave them a deserved win. But in a true show of sportsmanship, Ligisa’s coaching team encouraged Asango to “keep fighting, because greatness takes time and heart.”
And so, while the scorecards may not reflect it, Asango Junior School returns home not as losers, but as learners—and future contenders. The story of Asango is not defined by defeat, but by resilience, unity, and the pursuit of excellence.For now, they may be growing giants. But make no mistake—one day soon, they’ll be the team to beat.
