Day two of the 5th edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Migori featured an exciting football match between Siaya County and Homa Bay County.
One of the key objectives of the Piny Luo extravaganza is to promote talents and skills for economic prosperity while enhancing intercultural ties among Luo-inhabited regions, including counties in Kenya and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and others. The event also fosters cohesion, unity, and political tolerance among its communities.
In the 5th edition’s matches, the playoff for third place saw the Nyalore Administration team secure the bronze position. The coaches were Nicholas Nyapola for Siaya and Collins Kale for Homa Bay, the latter also serving as the KFF Nyanza Region NEC Chairman.
The match was played in memory of the late Prime Minister and ODM Party Leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, with fans and leaders observing a moment of silence and singing the National Anthem in his honour.
Siaya County was represented by CECM for Environment, Water, Climate Change, Irrigation, and Natural Resources, Prof. Jacqueline Oduol. Homa Bay was represented by Sports CECM E. Munga, Sarah Malit (Blue Economy), and various chief officers, among others.
Today’s activities at the Piny Luo Cultural Festival included a football match between Kenya Premier League champions, the legendary Gor Mahia (also known as K’Ogalo), and SoY from the western region. Another key match, between Kisumu and Migori, ended in a draw, leading to penalty kickoffs, with Kisumu winning 5-4.
Other cultural interaction games also took place, including women’s beach volleyball at Thimlich Ohinga beaches.
Winners will receive their prizes at tomorrow’s closing ceremony, which will be presided over by the four governors, elders, and other distinguished guests. The awards will be presented by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour for this year’s Piny Luo Celebrations, KER Odungi Randa and Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga. Final presentations are set to take place with President William Ruto in attendance alongside ODM Party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga.
The closing celebrations will be held at Rongo University, drawing the curtains on this year’s Piny Luo cultural extravaganza.
