Governor James Orengo has today led a delegation of representatives from Siaya County to attend the 5th Edition of the Piny Luo cultural extravaganza in Migori County.
Themed; "Luo Unity in Diversity: Harmonizing and Institutionalizing Our Heritage," the three-day cultural celebration will showcase the community's traditional values, beliefs, artefacts, rites, and ways of life, while highlighting connections with neighbouring families from East African regions, such as the Acholi from Uganda, Luos in Tanzania, parts of South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia.
The Chief Guest for this year's edition is Luo Council of Elders Chairperson Odungi Randa, joined by ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga, regional governors, and elders.
The 5th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival will take place at Rongo University, Senye Beach, Thimlich Ohinga, and Sony Stadium, among other satellite venues.
Last year, Siaya County hosted a similar event in a colourful ceremony graced by President William Ruto, his Ugandan counterpart Gen. (Rtd.) Yoweri K. Museveni, and the late ODM Leader Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, among other local and international dignitaries.
The Nyalore administration under Governor Orengo remains a key pillar of the devolved governance structure established by the 2010 Constitution, which was championed by then-Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga, Governor Orengo himself, activists, human rights defenders, and other reformers.Last year's Piny Luo cultural event in Siaya County included visits to several artefacts and museums, including Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo Sub-County. Other historical sites that hosted guests and international leaders included Got Ramogi hills known as the first settling point for the Luo community, Migwena Sports Centre, the iconic Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, and various other significant locations.
These cultural interactions among the Luo community and its sister groups help preserve traditions, values, beliefs, and rituals, while fostering unity under a shared political agenda and common goals for development and economic well-being.
Additionally, the event brings people together through traditional activities such as ajua games, food-eating competitions, traditional dances, crafts, games, and boat racing. These activities strengthen community bonds, promote cultural values, nurture talents and skills, and attract tourism for economic benefits.
The organising committees are co-chaired by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili and Migori County Secretary Dr. Oscar Olima, among others.
Today's activities feature football tournaments and beach events at Awendo Green Stadium and Senye Beach, including water sports, swimming, ajua, and volleyball. The football schedule includes semi-finals between Teams A and B, and Teams C and D, as well as a curtain-raiser ladies' match between Migori and Homa Bay. Later, play-offs will be held, with Siaya County facing Migori in the first beach volleyball semi-final to close day one.Elders from the four counties participated alongside performers, including Kichia dancers, Olare women's dancers, and groups performing Ramogi and Dudu dances.
Various leaders acknowledged that Migori County, as a multicultural region, provides the perfect opportunity for the Luo nation to converge and celebrate its rich cultural heritage.
Governors and leaders present included Dr. Ochilo Ayacko (host), Gladys Wanga ( Homabay), Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili, Principal Secretary for Trade Mrs. Regina Akoth Ombam( representing National Government) Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, Siaya County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, several county executives, chief officers, directors, elders, and other guests.
