The Siaya County Department of Tourism, Sports, Culture, and Arts joined Kenyans across the nation on 2 October to observe a candle-lighting ceremony marking the first anniversary of the passing of the late Prime Minister and founding leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila Amolo Odinga.

Speaking at the commemoration, the department’s Executive Committee Member (CECM), Dr. Kut Ochogo, declared that Odinga’s spirit remains vibrant in the hearts of the people. He noted that the late leader’s legacy is far from fading; rather, it is enduringly woven into the fabric of the nation and holds particularly deep resonance within the Luo community.

Echoing these sentiments, the department’s Chief Officer, Mr. Wilfred Nyagudi, remarked that powerful legacies deserve to be remembered and shared across generations. He urged staff to draw inspiration from Odinga’s life by striving to make a meaningful and lasting impact through their own work. He reminded attendees that a person’s good deeds endure long after they are gone and called on everyone to foster positivity in every endeavour.

Adding to the tributes, the Director for Sports and Arts, Dr. Sanmac Okoth, offered prayers for Odinga’s soul and lauded him as a monumental statesman whose influence spanned both Kenya and the broader African continent. Describing his passing as a profound tragedy that touched millions, Dr. Okoth highlighted how Odinga was viewed as a father figure—hence the affectionate title “Baba”—and noted that the greatest source of comfort lies in keeping his vision and values alive.

Concluding the speeches, the Director for Tourism and Culture, Dr. Kennedy Oreyo, emphasised the importance of honouring a historic life unlike any other. On behalf of the department, he extended heartfelt prayers for strength, peace, and emotional healing to Odinga’s family as they continue to navigate their loss.
