Siaya County Leadership Strengthens Commitment to Smart Start Siaya Initiative.

The County Government of Siaya has renewed its commitment to strengthening Early Childhood Development (ECD) through the implementation of Smart Start Siaya, the county’s model for nurturing care and holistic development of children during the critical early years of life.
Siaya County Executive Committee Members and Chief Officers have undergone an induction and sensitization programme on the implementation of Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development, dubbed the Smart Start Siaya Initiative.
The initiative focuses on ensuring that children aged 0–3 years receive the right foundation for healthy growth, learning and development, with emphasis on enabling children to thrive, not merely survive.
The programme is anchored on the five components of nurturing care: good health, adequate nutrition, responsive caregiving, opportunities for early learning, and safety and security. It brings together different sectors of government and partners to ensure that the needs of young children and their caregivers are addressed in a coordinated manner.
County leadership was called upon to take ownership of the initiative by providing leadership, investing in early childhood development, strengthening relevant services and systems, and continuously monitoring progress and outcomes.
The Smart Start Siaya model has continued to attract attention beyond the county and country, with delegations, including one from Mozambique, visiting Siaya to benchmark and learn from the county’s approach to nurturing care and early childhood development.
The programme underscores the importance of investing in children during the earliest years of life, when the foundations for health, learning, social development and future productivity are established.
The County First Lady, H.E. Betty Murungi, attended the induction alongside KMET Executive Director Dr. Monica Ogutu, among other Partners supporting the implementation of the Smart Start Siaya Initiative such as ADS- Nyanza and Catholic Relief Services(CRS).
The County Government of Siaya remains committed to strengthening partnerships and multi-sectoral approaches that place children at the centre of development, recognising that investing in Early Childhood Development is a smart investment in the future of Siaya County.
