SIAYA TO SUPPORT FISHER FOLK FOR BLUE ECONOMY GROWTH
Highlighting the Governor’s support for fisher folk, Acting County Secretary Ms. Elizabeth Adongo today received and held accountable consultative meeting with the Beach Management Unit (BMU) from West Yimbo Ward.
The meeting aimed to explore partnership opportunities, with a particular focus on strengthening the Usenge Fisher Folk SACCO. Discussions centred on building cooperative capacity, promoting value addition, and expanding market access through inclusive participation.
The engagement also sought to unlock sustainable economic opportunities within Usenge and across Kenya through greater economic integration.
The fisher folk delegation was led by Julius Odemba, Chairman of the SACCO, together with Erick Odemba and other members. They thanked the Nyalore administration under Governor James Orengo for its continued support, including the provision of patrol boats to curb illegal water activities and unauthorized fishing on the lake, as well as the construction of a pier in collaboration with the National Government.
Ms. Adongo underscored the various interventions the Nyalore administration has implemented for traders, alongside strategic partnerships that have significantly improved fish production for both the market economy and local consumption. These efforts, she noted, will enhance the region’s blue economy and contribute to the overall growth of Siaya County.
Today’s meeting is particularly significant as it marks a decisive step toward deeper collaboration between the county government and fisher folk. By aligning local needs with strategic support, the engagement lays a strong foundation for sustainable livelihoods, stronger cooperatives, and accelerated blue economy growth in Siaya.
