Kaluo Obinji Community-Based Organization (CBO) was a standout innovator at the Pre-Devolution Conference Innovation Exhibition held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town.
Based in Nyakongo Village, North Alego Ward, Alego Usonga Sub-County, this grassroots, community-led organization collaborates with youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) to promote sustainable farming, food security, and environmental restoration through local knowledge and innovative, low-cost practices.
To enhance farmer education, the CBO has partnered with reputable organizations, including Biovision Africa Trust through its Farmer Communication Programme (FCP). This collaboration facilitates the distribution of essential training materials, such as The Organic Farmer (TOF) Magazine, to farmers.
The CBO operates a modern, climate-resilient greenhouse with a vegetable seedling nursery capable of producing over 200,000 seedlings. They also cultivate fruit seedlings, such as Hass avocados and apples, and provide training in beekeeping, surplus crop production, and cash crop farming.
Their organic demonstration farm serves as a hands-on training site for farmers. Beyond agriculture, Kaluo Obinji CBO supports community development through initiatives such as:
• Agroforestry and fruit/indigenous tree nursery training and management.
• Support for kitchen gardens, small-scale farmers, and community food initiatives.
• A solar-powered community library offering educational resources and agricultural learning materials for farmers and students.
According to the chairperson of the CBO Mr. Maxwel Musungu, as a way to combat food insecurity, the CBO has trained over 300 local farmers in climate-resilient agriculture, distributed and planted more than 5,000 seedlings, reached over 100 students through its solar-powered library, and empowered youth, women, and PWDs with practical livelihood skills.
"Our eco-friendly practices include planting seedlings and using organic pesticides made from fermented bitter herbs to ensure sustainability," added Mr. Musungu.
During severe drought seasons, water scarcity threatened the CBO’s demo farm and the surrounding community. In response, Kaluo Obinji mobilized local support to dig a shallow well, providing a reliable water source for irrigation, household use, and medical services at Bar Ogunga Dispensary. This well has become a lifeline, sustaining crops, improving community health, and offering hope to families during dry seasons.
These efforts have significantly empowered women, youth, and PWDs, who actively participate in the organization’s programs.
Through its holistic approach, Kaluo Obinji CBO continues to foster sustainable development and resilience in Siaya County, creating a brighter future for its community.
