Following the recently concluded and highly successful three-day eye camp at Yala Sub-County Hospital, the County Government of Siaya, through the Department of Health and Sanitation in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation, has today officially kicked off yet another intensive three-day eye camp—this time at the Siaya County Referral Hospital.
Early this morning, long queues formed as residents from across the county arrived to receive free eye health services. The outreach team, comprising cataract surgeons, nurses, and support staff, immediately began attending to patients with a wide range of eye conditions. The services being offered include eye screening, diagnosis, treatment, provision of reading glasses, and cataract and other eye surgeries for eligible patients.
Dr. Calvin Omondi reiterated that a significant number of eye complications seen in the county remain preventable if detected early. He emphasized that bringing services closer to the people is essential in reducing avoidable blindness and improving overall eye health outcomes.
He further noted that the surge in turnout demonstrates not only the community’s need for specialized eye care but also the growing trust in the county's health outreach programs.
The Department of Health and Sanitation highlighted that the Siaya eye camp will run from 11th to 13th, with all services offered at no cost to the public. Priority will be given to individuals with cataracts, glaucoma suspicions, vision impairments, and other conditions requiring urgent attention.
The County Government affirmed its continued commitment to expanding access to quality, equitable healthcare through regular medical outreaches, strategic partnerships, and sustained investment in eye health services. The partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation remains instrumental in restoring sight and improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations across Siaya.
