The County Government of Siaya, through the Department of Health and Sanitation in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation, successfully concluded a three-day eye camp at Yala Sub-County Hospital, where hundreds of residents received free eye testing, screening, consultations, and corrective surgeries.
The outreach brought together a team of ophthalmologists,nurses, and support staff who provided comprehensive care to community members, many of whom were diagnosed with conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and pterygium. Patients requiring surgery were operated on immediately, while others received medication, reading glasses, or referrals for follow-up care.
Dr.Calvin Omondi noted that the majority of conditions detected were preventable causes of blindness, emphasizing the importance of taking services closer to the community to reduce avoidable vision loss.
Following the successful Yala eye camp, the Department of Health and Sanitation has announced that the next eye camp will take place at Siaya County Referral Hospital from 11th to 13th, where residents will once again access free eye screening and surgical services.
The county government remains committed to expanding access to quality healthcare and ensuring that vulnerable populations benefit from continuous medical outreach programs.
