Siaya County today marked a significant milestone in the fight against HIV following the official launch of the long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Lenacapavir at Bondo Sub County Hospital. The launch, held in partnership with the Ministry of Health, and the County Government of Siaya through the Department of Health and Sanitation, brought together healthcare providers, county health officials development partners, working in HIV prevention, as the facility became one of the sites rolling out the long-acting HIV prevention injections aimed at improving access and adherence to preventive care.
During the launch, the Director of Medical Services Dr. Eunice Fwaya welcomed the introduction of the injectable options, noting that they provide a convenient and effective alternative for individuals who may find it difficult to take daily oral medication. Dr. Fwaya emphasized that the Lenacapavir will play a critical role in reducing new HIV infections, particularly among populations at higher risk. She explained that unlike daily pills, injectable option offers long-lasting protection, making prevention easier and more convenient for many people and to the young who are at higher risk of new HIV infections.
The County AIDS and STI Coordinator Dr. Bob Awino reassured the public that the services will be delivered by trained health professionals and the injectable PrEP (Lenacapavir) services will initially be offered in major facilities including Bondo Sub-County Hospital, Siaya County Referral Hospital and other selected hospitals across Siaya County as the programme expands. The introduction of Lenacapavir is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts by the County and National government to curb new HIV infections and improve access to comprehensive HIV prevention services in Siaya County.
