Governor Orengo Convenes High-Level Meeting to Align County Emergency Operations for El Niño Mitigation
Governor James Orengo chaired a high-level Disaster Management Meeting on El Niño preparedness and mitigation, following official advisories from the National Government regarding forecasted El Niño-enhanced rainfall.
The Nyalore administration, through the Department of Disaster Management Secretariat—headed by the Governor and working with the office of the Regional Commissioner and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)—is currently finalizing the review of the multi-hazard contingency plan. This will ensure a coordinated, prompt, and effective response to potential climate-related hazards. It is essential that the County aligns its emergency operations and preparedness measures to mitigate the calamities that may occur with the onset of this El Niño-related rainfall.
The Secretariat also reviewed its financial capabilities in readiness for the coming rains, which, if not properly managed, could result in catastrophe. The peak period is expected from October to November this year, with Siaya anticipated to experience relatively minimal effects, though increased activities are likely around November. The contingency measures include the El Niño Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan 2026, early warning information, and other related strategies.
