The transformation of Sega Town from a quiet roadside center into a bustling modern hub reached a significant milestone today. Governor James Orengo conducted a comprehensive inspection of the ongoing construction of the Sega Market Link Road, a flagship infrastructure project that is now 90% complete.
Launched on April 1st last year, the project is entering its final stretch, with full completion expected within the next three months.
During his tour, the Governor inspected the craftsmanship of the earthworks, pavement layers, road furniture, and the newly laid asphalt concrete (AC). With only drainage works and road marking pending, the road already stands as a testament to the County Government of Siaya’s commitment to the "Nyalore" vision of decentralized development.
The upgrade of the 1.07-kilometer road to bitumen standards is more than just an engineering feat; it is an economic catalyst. Strategically located along the Kisumu-Busia highway, Sega was recently elevated to Town status by Governor Orengo, joining the ranks of Ukwala, Yala, and Usenge.
In his address to the residents, Governor Orengo commended the people of Sega for embracing the development. He noted that the aesthetic improvement of the town has already begun attracting investors.
"The opening of this town to businesses and investors is a direct result of improved infrastructure," the Governor stated. "We are seeing a tangible boost in local business activity as we make our urban centers more accessible and functional."
The project features a 6.0 meter carriageway flanked by 1.07 meter walkways on both sides, specifically designed to facilitate non-motorized traffic and improve safety for pedestrians. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11, focusing on creating inclusive, safe, and resilient communities.
By reclaiming encroached spaces and improving connectivity to residential areas and public offices, the road is expected to serve a growing population of over 10,000 residents.Sega Town Administrator Mr. Martin Ogolla echoed these sentiments, describing the project as a "game changer" that has already elevated the town's functional profile and reduced nighttime insecurity.
To ensure the longevity of the investment, the inspection team (from the Department of Public Works,Roads,Energy and Transport) that did an inspection earlier led by Director of Roads Mr. Samuel Ogeda, proposed a strategic extension to connect the link road directly back to the Kisumu-Busia highway. This move aims to further decongest the town center.
Additionally, the Governor emphasized the urgency of completing drainage systems to prevent seasonal flooding.
Beyond infrastructure, Governor Orengo used the platform to address social concerns. In his closing remarks, he issued a stern condemnation of the recent GSU killings in Gem. Championing the respect for human rights, the Governor reminded the gathering that true development must go hand-in-hand with the protection and dignity of every citizen.
As Sega Town prepares to celebrate the final completion of the Link Road in ninety days, the message is clear: Siaya is open for business, and the journey toward modern, sustainable urban living is well underway.
