Caregivers of children with delayed milestones and disabilities are strongly encouraged to seek regular check-ups at our health facilities rather than keeping the children at home. Earlier today, a review meeting to assess progress was held at Distinction Gardens Hotel in Siaya town.
The meeting brought together occupational therapists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic technologists, nutritionists, and the County Audiologist from various health facilities across the county. The meeting noted with concern that many caregivers still shy away from seeking professional help for children with delayed milestones and disabilities. This reluctance significantly limits opportunities for early intervention, which is critical for better outcomes.
The County Government of Siaya, in partnership with KMET through the Smart Start Siaya and Nyathi en Mwandu Programme, continues to scale up community outreach clinics aimed at identifying and supporting children with delayed milestones and disabilities. These clinics have played a vital role in raising awareness on Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) particularly among parents and caregivers.
The outreach clinics offer a comprehensive package of services, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nutritional support, orthopaedic technology services, hearing assessment and support, as well as proper referral for specialized care. Common conditions identified include cerebral palsy, delayed milestones, Down syndrome, and cleft lip and palate, among others.
By taking services closer to the community, the programme has enabled more children to access consistent care at least twice a month thereby greatly improving their quality of life and developmental outcomes. Caregivers of children with delayed milestones and disabilities are urged to prioritize regular medical check-ups and early intervention services. Seeking timely professional support can make a significant difference in managing these conditions and unlocking each child’s full developmental potential.
