The County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Cooperatives, Enterprise and Industrialization, Mrs. Christine Oyuu, today held a consultative meeting with officials from the Siaya County Cooperative Development Committee in preparation for the Ushirika Day celebrations scheduled for 4th July 2026.
This year's celebrations, themed "Cooperatives for a Peaceful World," will bring together cooperators from across the county to showcase the vital role of the cooperative movement in wealth creation, financial empowerment through SACCOs, sustainable development, and grassroots economic transformation.
During the meeting, the delegation discussed key challenges affecting cooperatives and explored strategies for strengthening the sector. Mrs. Oyuu reaffirmed the commitment of Governor James Orengo's administration to supporting cooperatives through capacity building for cooperative officers, revitalization of dormant cooperatives, and enhanced investment in the sector.
The County Government has set aside KSh 31 million in the Financial Year 2026/2027 for the Cooperative Development Fund, underscoring its commitment to growing the cooperative movement and creating economic opportunities for residents.
The meeting also highlighted the need to leverage cooperatives to establish value-addition industries. Among the proposals raised was the establishment of a poultry slaughterhouse to support chicken farmers and ensure members derive maximum returns from their investments.
Also present were Chief Officer for Trade, Cooperatives, Enterprise and Industrialization Mr. Michael Oliech and Director of Cooperatives Mr. Samwel Wambisa.
