The County Government of Siaya, led by Governor James Orengo, hosted Deputy President Dr. Kithure Kindiki as the chief guest at the Siaya County Boda Boda Sacco Empowerment event. The event took place at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Grounds and was convened by Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga. It brought together thousands of boda boda riders, national and county leaders, and stakeholders to advance financial inclusion, safety improvements, and economic growth in Kenya’s informal transport sector.
This initiative forms part of the national government’s policy to uplift informal sectors across Kenya’s 47 counties and 210 constituencies. It has already empowered more than 150 economic segments, including youth- and women-led ventures such as mama mboga businesses. In Siaya, the event aligns with the Nyalore Administration’s youth empowerment plan under Governor Orengo, which is funded by development partners to create jobs in both formal and informal sectors.
A major highlight was the resource mobilization campaign for Siaya’s Boda Boda SACCOs, which raised millions of shillings to ensure economic sustainability. Financial contributions were provided, along with pledges from other dignitaries.
Deputy President Kindiki announced significant national investments directed toward Siaya County, particularly in the blue economy. These include grants to Beach Management Units (BMUs), support for the Luanda Kotieno Fish Landing Site, and ongoing projects at Wich Lum and Kokach, among others.
Siaya stands to gain from various projects, such as 25 fresh produce markets in areas including Ukwala, Bondo, and Alego Usonga; affordable and institutional housing; upgrades to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium; and improvements to Siaya Referral Hospital.
Governor Orengo leveraged the platform to promote the upcoming Siaya International Trade and Investment Conference (October 14-17, 2025), positioning the county as a leading investment destination. President Ruto is expected to launch additional initiatives at the event, targeting business executives and industry players to spur economic prosperity.
The event drew attendance from Senate Majority Whip and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, Royal Media Services Chairman SK Macharia, President’s aide Farouk Kibet, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, regional commissioners, and Boda Boda National Chairman Kevin Mubadi of the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya. Other participants included MPs such as Aduma Owuor (Nyakach), Peter Masara (Suna West), Rozah Buyu (Kisumu West), and Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo), as well as Speaker George Okode, county officials, and others.
