The 9th Edition of the International Festival for Choral and Traditional Music (Africa Sings), organised by Soprano Events Ltd, recently concluded with national teams receiving Silver, Bronze and Gold category awards.
Held under the theme “United Voices, Uniting People,” this year’s festival celebrated Africa’s vibrant vocal heritage, cultural harmony and traditional musical expression. The prestigious event featured 32 groups and 11 soloists who delivered outstanding performances at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Kenya.
This marked a historic milestone as Kenya hosted the festival for the first time, following Nigeria. Previous host nations include Togo (twice), Ghana, France, Burundi, the United Kingdom, Benin and Nigeria. Each edition consistently attracts participants from more than 15 African countries and beyond.
Representing local Kenyan talent, the County Government of Siaya Staff Choir, under the Department of Tourism, Sports, Culture and Arts, presented a rich programme that included:
- “Magambo Wuod Bondo” – a traditional folk song honouring a leader who champions education and community support;
- “Jambo Bwana” – a regional arrangement of the classic work song;
- “Owang’ Winyo” – an arranged folk piece;
the traditional Dodo dance – a vibrant display of cultural heritage; and a moving female solo chant by Ms Janita Adhiambo, praising her sister-in-law Adhiambo for her unwavering support.
The choir’s impressive performances earned them both a Silver Diploma and a Bronze Diploma. The next edition of Africa Sings will take place in Monrovia, Liberia, from 6 to 10 October 2027.
