The Department of Education, Youth Affairs, Gender and Social Services is mandated to promote inclusive education, empower young people, advance gender equality, and enhance the welfare of vulnerable groups within the county. The department is responsible for the management and development of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres, vocational training institutions, and bursary programs to improve access to quality education and skills development. It also champions youth empowerment through capacity building, innovation support, sports, and talent development initiatives. In addition, the department implements gender mainstreaming programs, supports women’s economic empowerment, and coordinates interventions that protect children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable members of society. Through partnerships with communities and development stakeholders, the department works to build an inclusive, equitable, and empowered society where every citizen has the opportunity to realize their potential.

Department Information

Siaya County is doing extremely well in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) with an enrolment of 98%. The County has established about 700 ECD centres out of which 340 centres have classrooms constructed and are fully equipped. The total number of ECD teachers stands at 608 against a requirement of 1,450.

The County has 35 Vocational Training Centres (VTC). Many VTCs have only one county employee and volunteers as teaching staff.
