Overview

Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, located in Bondo, Siaya County, is one of Kenya’s most significant historical and political heritage sites. The site is closely associated with the lives, leadership and enduring legacies of two influential figures in Kenya’s political history: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President, and Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya.

More than a family homestead, Kang’o Ka Jaramogi represents a remarkable chapter in Kenya’s journey towards independence, multiparty democracy, constitutional reform and the advancement of social justice.

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum and the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum stand as places of remembrance, reflection and national pride, honouring the contributions of two generations of leadership whose influence extends beyond Siaya County to the wider Kenyan nation.

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum is dedicated to the memory of Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga (1911–1994), a distinguished freedom fighter, nationalist and statesman who played a central role in Kenya’s struggle for independence and the development of its democratic institutions.
As Kenya’s first Vice President following independence, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga became widely recognised for his commitment to political freedom, equality, social justice and the protection of democratic rights.
His political career was marked by a firm belief in accountable leadership, national unity and the empowerment of ordinary citizens. Despite facing significant political challenges, he remained a prominent voice in the struggle for greater political pluralism and democratic reform.
The mausoleum preserves his memory and provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate his contribution to Kenya’s independence movement, political development and national identity.
It also serves as an important centre of historical reflection, offering younger generations an opportunity to understand the sacrifices and principles that shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.

Preservation of National Heritage

The preservation and development of the mausoleums reflect a commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s historical heritage for present and future generations.

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum contains historical exhibits, photographs and artefacts associated with Kenya’s independence movement, political leadership and Luo cultural heritage.

The Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum, officially unveiled on 7 October 2026, incorporates architectural features, photographs, artistic displays and commemorative inscriptions celebrating the former Prime Minister’s life and contribution to the nation.

Developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, with technical involvement from the National Museums of Kenya, the new memorial forms part of the wider transformation of Kang’o Ka Jaramogi into a national heritage and remembrance site.

Tourism and Educational Value

Kang’o Ka Jaramogi holds considerable potential as a destination for heritage tourism, historical education and cultural appreciation within Siaya County.

The site provides opportunities for students, researchers, historians, cultural enthusiasts and members of the public to explore important aspects of Kenya’s political and democratic history.

Its heritage value includes the preservation of historical records, appreciation of Luo cultural traditions, promotion of intergenerational learning and recognition of Siaya County’s contribution to national leadership.

As part of Siaya County’s wider tourism landscape, Kang’o Ka Jaramogi complements other cultural, historical and natural attractions, strengthening the county’s identity as a destination of historical significance.
