Siaya County is positioning itself as a potential hub for clean energy development and industrial transformation following high-level engagements between Governor James Orengo and South Korea’s Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
In a significant step towards advancing Kenya’s nuclear energy programme, Siaya Governor H.E. James Orengo, together with representatives from the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), held strategic consultative meetings with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), led by its Deputy President, Mr. Park Yong-Kwon.
The discussions focused on strengthening international cooperation, enhancing technical capacity and exploring opportunities to advance Kenya’s nuclear energy ambitions, with Siaya County emerging as a prospective location for the country’s nuclear power development programme.
The engagement marks an important milestone in Governor Orengo’s commitment to positioning Siaya County as a centre for energy investment, industrial development and sustainable economic growth.
A key highlight of the partnership is KEPCO’s contribution to Kenya’s nuclear energy capacity-building efforts. Through the KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS), 53 Kenyan professionals have already received specialised training, equipping them with critical technical knowledge and expertise required to support the country’s emerging nuclear energy sector.
This investment in human capital represents a significant foundation for Kenya’s long-term nuclear energy aspirations and demonstrates the importance of international partnerships in developing the specialised skills necessary for such major infrastructure projects.
For Siaya County, the proposed nuclear power development presents an opportunity to transform the region’s economic landscape.
If successfully realised, the project could strengthen national energy security, support reliable electricity supply for households and businesses, stimulate industrialisation across the Lake Region and create employment opportunities for young people.
The anticipated investment could also attract supporting industries, encourage infrastructure development, expand opportunities for local enterprises and contribute to sustained economic growth across Siaya County and neighbouring regions.
Governor Orengo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to pursuing strategic partnerships capable of unlocking Siaya’s economic potential and improving the livelihoods of residents.
The initiative aligns with the County Government’s broader development aspirations of attracting investment, expanding economic opportunities and establishing a strong foundation for sustainable prosperity.
While the proposed nuclear power project remains subject to national planning, technical assessments, regulatory approvals, environmental and social safeguards, and public participation, the continued engagement with international energy partners represents an important step towards translating Kenya’s long-term energy ambitions into tangible development opportunities.
Through collaboration with NuPEA, KenGen and international partners such as KEPCO, Governor Orengo continues to champion initiatives intended to position Siaya County at the forefront of Kenya’s emerging energy economy.
