The County Government of Siaya has engaged residents of Maranda in Bondo Sub-County in discussions on the county’s energy policy, focusing on improving electricity access, promoting clean energy and addressing gaps within the energy sector.

The public participation exercise, held at the Maranda District Officer’s (DO) Office on Thursday, 5 November 2026, brought together county government representatives, ward administration officials, representatives from the nuclear energy sector and members of the local community. The session was facilitated by Mr Victor Okado, representing the energy sector.

During the engagement, representatives from the nuclear energy sector highlighted the importance of collaboration between the county government, Kenya Power and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in strengthening electricity connectivity and ensuring a reliable power supply to households.

The discussions also emphasised the need to promote alternative energy sources, particularly Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), to reduce reliance on traditional cooking fuels such as charcoal and firewood.

Key gaps identified included limited public awareness of energy matters, inadequate technical capacity and the need for a policy framework that clearly defines energy interventions within the county’s jurisdiction.

Participants were also informed of the potential opportunities associated with energy development, including improved infrastructure, reliable electricity supply, industrial growth, local business opportunities and increased prospects for research and innovation.

During the question-and-answer session, residents sought clarification on the county government’s strategies for ensuring household electricity connectivity. Concerns were also raised about security measures against vandalism of energy infrastructure. In response, Mr Victor Okado clarified that security matters fall primarily under the mandate of the National Government.

Although the exercise experienced a slow start due to delays in communicating information to residents, attendance gradually improved, allowing community members to raise concerns, seek clarification and contribute their views.

The engagement provided an important platform for incorporating community perspectives into discussions on energy policy and shaping interventions that support sustainable development and improved livelihoods across Siaya County.
