Siaya County joined the rest of the world in marking ๐™’๐™ค๐™ง๐™ก๐™™ ๐™๐™ค๐™ค๐™™ ๐˜ฟ๐™–๐™ฎ 2026, reaffirming its commitment to the fight against hunger and the promotion of efficient, inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable food systems. The celebrations were led by the CECM for Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock and Blue Economy, Hon. Willis Ochieng, and brought attention to the need for collective action to strengthen food security and improve livelihoods.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ซ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š ๐™๐™ค๐™™๐™–๐™ฎ. ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ ๐™๐™ค๐™ข๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฌ,โ€ underscores the importance of science, technology and indigenous knowledge in building sustainable food systems capable of feeding future generations. The theme also calls for a multi-stakeholder approach involving governments, smallholder farmers, young people, the private sector and civil society to reduce food waste, protect natural resources and promote responsible agricultural practices.

The celebrations were held at Oyiera Farm in Nyabeda Sub-location, North Gem Ward, where hundreds of farmers had an opportunity to learn and exchange knowledge on climate-smart agricultural practices through practical demonstrations in the fields. The event provided a platform for farmers to appreciate innovative farming techniques that can help address the effects of climate change, improve productivity and strengthen resilience in agricultural production.

Siaya County, through its qualified extension personnel, continues to promote food sovereignty by encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, supporting farmers and strengthening local food production systems. Through these efforts, the County seeks to build a self-reliant generation with improved access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food, while safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
