Siaya County Stadium: A Beacon of Sports Transformation and Development

Siaya County Stadium is a multi-purpose sports facility in Siaya County, Kenya. The stadium has a seating capacity of 20,000 people, with an aim of expanded roofing for the entire stadium to a 60,000 capacity by the end of the project in the next phases, with inclusion of netball and volleyball courts.

The development of the stadium is part of a broader initiative by the County Government of Siaya to improve sports infrastructure. It is expected to cater for various sporting activities, including football, athletics, and other local sports. The Nyalore Government's commitment to revitalizing Siaya Stadium has ushered in an era of remarkable progress and transformation. Since August 2022, this project has been rejuvenated under the guidance of Governor James Orengo from 70% completion of phase one.

The Director Sports and Arts, Dr. David Sanmac Okoth, has applauded Governor James Orengo and stakeholders for prioritizing the completion of phase I and part of phase II work of Siaya County Stadium. In the last one year, there have been tremendous changes with support from the Governor, including works on concrete, terraces, perimeter wall, roofing, and the placement of overhead and underground water tanks. In addition, a concrete base has been done on the athlete track awaiting laying down of the tartan rubber, which will be completed in a month's time. To ensure that the stadium can host matches even at night, the administration plans to install a state-of-the-art tartan rubber track on a waterproof concrete base and high-mast lighting. Other improvements like stair ways, protective grilling, parking area, finishes in the toilets both in interior and exterior, grass planting, trees and landscaping the pitch that was originally high levelled.

Notable renovations have been concluded, including the installation of the roof, overhead and ground water tanks, stairways and protective railings on the terraces. Comprehensive enhancements to restroom facilities, and a previously undeveloped parking area have also been undertaken. The grounds have been beautifully landscaped, featuring lush grass and trees, while the football pitch has been properly prepared for playing.

Stadium Manager Juma Felix emphasized that the primary objective of Siaya Stadium is to provide athletes with access to top-notch facilities, empowering them to exploit their full potential. The stadium is seen as an opportunity to nurture local talent, boost sports tourism, and provide a venue for community events and competitions within the region. This project is important to the Siaya community because it will attract businesses, social interactions, and political interactions. Once completed, the Siaya County Stadium is expected to have modern amenities, such as seating stands, changing rooms, and proper lighting, contributing to the sporting culture and development.

The official opening of the stadium is slated for 1 January 2025, with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the Chief Guest. The legendary Gor Mahia FC will play against Tanzania's Yanga SC. This event will not only boost the local business community but also enhance connections between upcoming players and the veterans from these renowned teams.
