Aquaculture Transformation Rollout in Lwanda K’Otieno

The County Government of Siaya, through its Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock, and Blue Economy, has launched a transformative project aimed at boosting the livelihoods of low-level fish farmers.

Implemented under the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP), this initiative involves the construction and installation of 19 modern high-density fish cages in Lwanda K'Otieno, located in South Uyoma Ward. This development represents a strategic investment in the aquaculture sector, targeting small-scale farmers to enhance fish production and promote sustainable economic growth.

Valued at KES 18.4 million, the project is set to directly benefit 285 low-level fish farmers in the region. Each fish cage is designed to hold up to 30,000 fish, significantly increasing the aquaculture capacity of the area. The construction and installation of these cages are expected to be completed within a month, ensuring that farmers can begin operations promptly. This modern infrastructure is a significant step forward in improving aquaculture practices and enabling farmers to meet growing market demands.

Upon completion, the project’s first production cycle, which spans eight months, is expected to generate 171 metric tons of fish. This translates to an estimated KES 51.5 million in revenue, providing a substantial boost to the local economy. To ensure the success of this initial phase, farmers will receive free fingerlings and feeds, enabling them to start operations without financial strain. This support underscores the County’s commitment to empowering small-scale farmers and fostering sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the community by enhancing food security, improving household incomes, and reducing poverty levels in the region. By equipping farmers with modern tools and resources, the programme also aims to build resilience against economic challenges and environmental changes. The County Government believes that the project will not only improve the livelihoods of individual farmers but also create a ripple effect of economic growth and stability across the region.

This investment aligns with broader goals to strengthen the blue economy and promote sustainable practices in fish farming. By focusing on capacity building and resource provision, the programme aims to transform aquaculture into a viable and profitable venture for low-level farmers. It is a testament to the County Government’s dedication to fostering economic empowerment while addressing food insecurity and unemployment challenges.
