As the first shovel of dirt was turned, it symbolized a community united in purpose, ready to support the health and well-being of future generations. Governor James Orengo, in collaboration with the M-Pesa Foundation led by the Chairperson of Safaricom Foundation, Joseph Ogutu, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new maternity ward and laboratory at Nyangu Health Centre in West Ugenya Ward, Ugenya Subcounty. The landmark event, which marked a significant step towards improving maternal health services in the region, promises to provide expectant mothers with state-of-the-art facilities and compassionate care. This facility currently serves over 8,100 residents and is crucial in addressing the community's health needs, especially for mothers and children.
In a statement by Mr. Joseph Ogutu, “No woman should lose life while giving life,” the new maternity ward is projected to accommodate approximately 4% of the local population of expectant mothers, which translates to around 326 women. Currently, the health center handles averagely 16 deliveries per month in a converted female ward. The establishment of a dedicated maternity facility will significantly increase this number, ensuring that more mothers receive the care they require during childbirth.
By extension, the new laboratory will enhance the health center’s capacity to provide accurate and timely diagnosis for various diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
The Chairman highlighted M-Pesa's dedication to corporate social responsibility and acknowledged the collaborative efforts between the county government and the foundation, highlighting the conducive environment fostered by the governor that allows for such impactful partnerships.
Governor James Orengo emphasized His government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access, stating, "Today, we lay the foundation not just for a building but for a brighter future for our mothers and children," added Orengo. He further expressed his gratitude to the Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation for their support, which has facilitated the development of multiple health facilities within the county. He urged the residents of Nyangu to take ownership of the new facility, emphasizing its importance as a legacy and resource for future generations.
With the Nyangu Maternity Health Centre on the horizon, this partnership between government and corporate leaders sets a powerful precedent for collaborative efforts in public health, inspiring hope and paving the way for a healthier tomorrow. The construction of the maternity and laboratory blocks marks a significant turning point for Nyangu Health Centre, promising improved healthcare services and restored dignity for mothers and their newborns.
In attendance were local MCAs, CEC for Health Dr. Martin K’Onyango, Chief Officer of Health Dr. Samuel Omondi, the hospital board, management, and other dignitaries.
