Governor Orengo Meets Representatives from Alego Yala Swamp Community and Yimbo Yala Swamp Community Over the Controversial Yala Swamp Land

The County Government of Siaya (CGS) under Governor James Orengo hosted a section of representatives of Alego Yala Swamp Community and Yimbo Yala Swamp Community, both of whom are in disagreement with the decision to lease community land to an investor without their knowledge or consent.

Both communities have appealed to the County Government of Siaya (CGS) to return the land to them. They argue that the land rightfully belongs to the community and that the leasing process bypassed their involvement, leaving them sidelined in decisions affecting their source of livelihood.

During the meeting, Gov. Orengo commended the two communities for courageously voicing their grievances and standing up for their interests. He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue carefully, noting that the status of Yala Swamp requires thorough consideration and legal clarity.

The Governor urged the representatives to remain peaceful and work closely with the County Government of Siaya as the matter is resolved through a judicious process. He assured them that his administration is committed to finding a lasting solution to the matter.

In attendance were County Secretary Mr. Joseph Ogutu; CECMs Mr. Maurice Mc’Orege (Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development), Mr. Sylvester K’Okoth (Agriculture, Irrigation, Food, Livestock and Fisheries), Prof. Hon. Jacqueline Oduol (Water, Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources), and Madam Angeline Atieno (Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture); MCA Central Alego Ward Hon. David Omondi; Chief Officer Governance Administration and ICT Hon. Walter Okelo; Chief of Staff Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna; and County Legal Officer Mr. Leonard Okanda.
