Siaya County is among the 12 Counties that made it to the Inaugural National County Peer Review Mechanism Summit that was held at KICC in Nairobi. The County Peer Review Mechanism, a voluntary Governance Self-Assessment tool was developed to give opportunities for Counties to share experience, reinforce best practices, identify deficiencies and assess capacity building needs.
Siaya Governor, James Orengo who was present at the Summit, that was Chaired by his Kisumu counterpart Prof. Anyang’ Nyongo applauded the Organizers for the opportunity given to County leaders to gauge public perceptions and pinpoint areas needing improvement in services offered to the people emphasizing that this mechanism was crucial in ensuring Leaders are on the right path to improving their Counties through enhanced service delivery. The Governor said the Assessment will enable him to understand which services citizens are satisfied with and which areas require improvement.
ECD Centers lacking play equipment and sufficient learning materials, limited ratio of teachers to pupils, health facilities lacking basic equipment and services with most villages missing out on piped water were some of the challenges that Siaya residents who participated in the assessment brought to the attention of the Peer Review Secretariat.
Governor Orengo assured the participants and residents of Siaya that his Government will work diligently in addressing the gaps and moving forward ensure better services are offered to the people and see to it that residents are well informed. From the Report, it was noted that Siaya residents showed satisfaction in services offered in the Agricultural services, Education (ECDE), Roads, County Law Enforcement and Promotion of Public Participation.
Establishment of the Smart Start Siaya, Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development Initiative was pointed out as one of the Best practices carried out in the County.The initiative aims at bolstering early childhood education and care that enhances cognitive, emotional and physical development in young children.
