Siaya’s Agricultural Subsidy Program Bolsters Food Security in Alignment with SDGs and Nyalore Agenda

The County Government of Siaya (CGS), under the leadership of H.E. Governor James Orengo, has launched a transformative agricultural initiative aimed at enhancing productivity and supporting vulnerable households. The Long Rains 2025 Campaign, rolled out by the Department of Agriculture, Food, Livestock, and Fisheries, commenced with the distribution of over 116 tons of essential farm inputs to farmers across all 30 wards.

The subsidies include certified maize, green grams, and sorghum seeds, as well as planting and top-dressing fertilizers. These resources are designed to ensure that farmers, particularly those in need, have the tools to improve agricultural output and strengthen food security

Through the Ward Development Project, 750 two-kilogram packets of certified maize seeds were distributed free to women, reinforcing the Nyalore Government’s dedication to empowering women in agriculture. Governor Orengo, who officiated the launch in Central Gem Ward, emphasized that the program is a cornerstone of efforts to enhance economic resilience and ensure a stable food supply for the county’s residents.

Accompanied by key leaders, including County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Mr. Sylvester K’Okoth, Speaker of the County Assembly Rt. Hon. George Okode, the host MCA Hon. Sylas Madingu among other leaders, Gov. Orengo urged farmers to visit designated collection points in their wards to access these critical inputs.

This initiative aligns directly with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): Zero Hunger, which focuses on ending hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture - an urgent priority for rural counties like those in Siaya, while also advancing the Nyalore 9-Point Agenda’s vision for food security.
