WHO Donates Health Kits for Improving Maternal Care

WHO Donates Health Kits for Improving Maternal Care

The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated reproductive health equipment and kits to Siaya County, aimed at enhancing maternal care. During the handover, Dr. Martin K’Onyango, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health and Sanitation, praised the WHO team for their donation, acknowledging the severe health challenges faced by the county which necessitate further support.

Siaya County, known for having one of the highest sickness rates in Kenya, desperately requires improvements in its healthcare system. According to Dr. K’Onyango, the donated items, which include reproductive health kits, are targeted at community health clinics and primary health care institutions (Level 1) and cover services like family planning, Post-Rape Care (PRC), and delivery. These kits will address a broad spectrum of needs, including childbirth, STI treatment, care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and general healthcare.

Despite ongoing efforts, Siaya continues to record some of the highest maternal mortality rates in Kenya. Dr. K’Onyango believes that enhancing access to reproductive health services through these kits will significantly lower maternal mortality rates and improve overall women's health.

This donation, valued at $15,000USD (approximately Ksh 1.9 million), is part of Governor James Orengo's Nyalore Initiative aimed at improving health service delivery. The donation ensures equitable resource distribution across the health sector, enabling every hospital and community health clinic in Siaya to serve the community better. This donation consists of an assortment of essential medical supplies aimed at enhancing reproductive health services in the County. The equipment will facilitate various critical services, including delivery assistance, post-rape treatment, and the management of sexually transmitted infections. Furthermore, it includes supplies for oral and injectable contraception, contraceptive implants, and the management of complications arising from miscarriage and abortion.

Dr. K’Onyango assured that the county government will ensure these kits reach the intended health facilities. He also pledged continued collaboration with WHO and other partners to enhance health service delivery throughout the county.

The county government anticipates that this partnership with WHO and other collaborators will lead to better health outcomes for its citizens. Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, WHO’s Country Representative, was represented at the event by Dr. John Ogange, the District Health Systems Officer.
